The Cork Literary and Scientific Society was founded in 1820 and is one
of the oldest such societies in Ireland.  Members still meet regularly in Cork to hear a series of sixteen lectures held during the winter months.   Our 190th season begins on 15th October 2009 and ends on 4th March 2010, with a break for Christmas. If you would like to join, just come along to the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery on Thursday evenings (details below) and enquire at the desk near the lecture hall.  Lectures start at 8.00pm. Thursday October 15
Our opening lecture is by Peter Murray, Curator of the Crawford Art Gallery, who will speak about ‘Medieval Realities and Medievalist Ideals: Lismore's Cultural Heritage’.

Thursday October 22
Author of a recent field guide to the street furniture of Cork City, Tom Spalding will provide a presentation on ‘An Historical Review of Public Lighting in Cork City’.

Thursday October 29
'Shanghai and Cork: Threads Through History' is the title of the lecture by historian Dr. Alicia St. Leger.

Thursday November 5
Tim O’Brien will present a talk entitled ‘Reflections: The Cork tram era, plus a pictorial focus on some tragic events in Cork in the 1912 to 1922 era’.

Thursday November 12
Carol Quinn, Archivist, UCC Library will discuss ‘Archives in Ireland – the state of the Nation’ – the importance of family and business archives in supplementing the official record, focusing on some of the collections held at UCC Library.

Thursday November 19
A return visit to Cork by Rosie Swale whose presentation is entitled ‘A little run around the world’.

Thursday November 26
Terry O’Regan of Landscape Alliance Ireland will discuss ‘The Shape of Place and Space: An exploration of the making and breaking of landscape and the resultant impact on our personal and communal sense of happiness, contentment, sanity and pain.’

Thursday December 3
‘Ancestors in the Royal Irish Constabulary, Dublin Metropolitan Police and other Irish police forces’ is the title of the presentation by Jim Herlihy.

Acclaimed underwater photographer, John Collins, will present ‘Planet Ocean – an undersea journey’.

Thursday January 21
Our president, Canon George Salter, will look at the interesting topic of ‘Lakes and Forests of Fermanagh with Ancient Sites’.

Thursday January 28
‘Predators - twenty years of photography in the forest’ is the subject of the lecture by Paul Goldstein.

Thursday February 4
Renowned actor and director Michael Twomey will present a talk entitled ‘It makes me laugh’.

Thursday February 11
The Honourable Mr. Justice Adrian Hardiman will discuss ‘Cork themes in James Joyce’s Ulysses’.

Thursday February 18
A welcome return visit by Keith Holmes whose illustrated lecture will feature ‘Desirable Residences’.

Thursday February 25
‘Ireland’s most severe tornadoes’ is the subject of the talk by Dr. John Tyrrell, an expert on this subject.

Thursday March 4
The final lecture of the season will look at ‘Life on the Marsh: aspects of the early Hiberno-Norse town of Cork’ by archaeologist Deborah Sutton.
